Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian was a big project that
included design & animation for Blu-ray, DVD and 2 fun interactive games
for kids. The Blu-ray navigation included a gold picture frame with edge
detail that would expand to reveal sub-menus. This interface was added
during authoring. The DVD design shares the same animated background
with simplified main menu buttons and totally custom sub-menus.
The intro animation includes a 3D camera move flying down a hallway of
portraits. Each portrait was built from a still frame with a new background
and treated in Painter 5 with the impressionist effect. After the camera flies
down the hallway it appears to enter the last painting with the blue museum
environment that features all the characters from the movie. Each element
was processed with the impressionist effect and positioned in 3D space in
After Effects. The animation for this project is pretty much all 3D camera
moves in AE and a couple of animated lens flares and shimmering effects.
One interactive DVD game lets kids choose to build a blimp, plane or rocket
and select all the details including propulsion and a custom paint job. The
other game is computer based and includes hilarious monkey slapping fun.
