Working on the Hellboy II Blu-ray and DVD at Company Wide Shut was a lot
of fun. The Blu-ray navigation includes a customized organic looking tiered
panels interface that functions like the standard Universal Blu-ray onscreen
controls. This interface was added during authoring. The DVD interface
design is totally different but shares the same theme of the Elemental creature
with green moss growing around the destroyed city scape.
The Hellboy II: The Golden Army logo was animated and rendered in
Cinema 4D. Then we traced some of the detail seen in Nuada's gold egg
device to create the flourishes behind the logo and added this in After Effects.
The larger falling gold leafs are 3D rendered in Cinema 4D and the smaller
gold atmospheric particles are generated with Trapcode Particular. The logo
is wiped away using Trapcode Form.
All the Blu-ray menu video, music and sound effects were edited in After
Effects. The DVD motion menu has green moss that appears to slowly grow
to fill the vines and and floral looking frame. The moss is generated by
Trapcode Particular. The city block in the background of the DVD design have
editorial "projected" across the faces of the buildings and another editorial of
Hellboy framed in the upper right corner.
