The Volume 6 Blu-ray is my latest Futurama project. It started out as a rough
sketch of the looping tube with a city skyline and statue of liberty and evolved
to what you see here. Look closely and you'll see some silhouetted figures
zooming around the tube during the animation. These are actual 3D models
of some of Futurama's secondary characters.
Animation work started in Cinema 4D with building of the tube, rings, and
custom shaders. The shader for the tube is a painted photoshop layer in
"Luminance" mode with "Transparency" enabled and the rings and antennas
have multiple layers of dark purple to add the graphical looking shadows.
There are no lights or 3D shadows in the scene as we were going for a
"propaganda" look like the packaging. The TV element and statue of liberty
are rendered in the 3D pass so the tube in front can have transparency and
the tube behind can be completely obscured by the graphics.
Once the 3D render was complete, all the rendered RGB elements and matte
passes were loaded into AE along with the 3D camera data so the video could
easily be composited into the segments on the tube. After a little color
correction, video and music editing were also done in AE.
The navigation element was also designed by Jean-Paul and delivered to the
authoring facility to be programmatically added to the final product which
includes 2 Blu-ray discs.
